WOODBURY DANCE CENTER
Competition line information 2009 – 2010
Are you interested in auditioning for a competition line? Here is some information to help you decide if competition dance is right for you.
Competition line dancers must be at an intermediate to advanced level. They should have good technique in jazz, tap and ballet. They should feel comfortable performing on stage in front of large audiences. They must also display good behavior and focus in class.
Auditions for the 2009 – 20010 WDC competition lines will take place on Wednesday, July 22nd & Thursday, July 23rd. Classes to prepare for the auditions will be held July 8th – 21st. During the audition dancers will perform routines and combinations taught during the prep classes. Dancers are required to wear a black leotard and tan tights for the auditions on July 22nd & 23rd.
Competition lines practice three days a week during the regular season (Sept – May). Total number of hours per week depends on age and level of each line. Regular attendance is required for all line classes as described in the attendance policy. Tuition ranges from $85 to $120 per month depending on the group and amount of class time. Competition fees, workshop fees and costume fees are an additional $55 to $105 each month. These average amounts are for lines for dancers in kindergarten through 8th grade.
Lines compete at four regional competitions each year. These competitions are held in the spring between March and May and are located in St. Paul or Minneapolis. Most of the competition lines are also required to attend a national competition each summer at a location chosen by the directors. This competition is often out of state depending on what locations are offered each year. In the past we have traveled to St. Louis, Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Virginia Beach, Boston, Tampa and Chicago. We usually have the opportunity to attend a national competition in the Twin Cities every two or three years.
The competition lines also perform in many of the WDC spring recitals.
Fundraising opportunities are available to those who choose to participate including selling wreaths, working at the Xcel and doing concessions at our recitals through the Youth Dance Parent Association. Membership in the YDPA is required to participate in most fundraisers.
SUMMER CLASSES
Dancers ages 7 to 9 should consider taking additional summer classes in June to prepare for the auditions. Attached is our schedule for pre-audition classes.
